jerfrey: Germany: Nuclear power to be phased out by 2022
Germany’s coalition government has announced a reversal of policy that will see all the country’s nuclear power plants phased out by 2022. The decision makes Germany the biggest industrial power to announce plans to give up nuclear energy. Environment Minister Norbert Rottgen made the announcement following late-night talks. Chancellor Angela Merkel set up a panel to review nuclear power following the crisis at Fukushima in Japan.

Being called one of the largest “mass detentions” in recent times, 131 people were arrested in front of the White House last Thursday and Friday for protesting the US war in Afghanistan, among other places throughout the world. Protestors held signs such as “How is the war economy working for you?” and “Peace on Earth?”
This protest coincided with a recent publication of a poll in the Washington Post which stated 60% of Americans have found the Afghanistan War has not been worth the trouble. The protest was an attempt to spark a larger movement amongst the American people who have stayed mostly inactive in their opinions.
So far, most major news outlets have not reported the protest, including the Washington Post, the local newspaper which apparently did not find the story important enough to go along with their poll.
